How people with learning disabilities are helping to improve local services

Hivewatch is a partnership between Healthwatch and The Hive, a charity that supports people with learning disabilities. Authorised representatives conduct Enter and View visits in partnership.

Through involving members of The Hive as ‘experts by experience’ we wanted to show how people with learning disabilities can make a real difference when they speak out and empower others to be able to contribute to better services and be able to use them independently.

We trained five ‘Hive’ members to be authorised Enter and View representatives. They then visited health and social care services, exploring how accessible they are for people with learning disabilities and making recommendations for improvement.

“It was brilliant that the Doctors listened to what we had to say, it made me proud that they took our suggestions and that they used easy read when they wrote back to us”

Will, Hivewatch Volunteer

Mike

“I’ve enjoyed it being a Hivewatch volunteer. It made me feel proud and pleased when they wrote to us saying what they have changed. It was good that they understood what we were telling them and they agreed to make things better”
